Is it time to move on from liquid eye primers?

Makeup By Mario ‘Master Eye Set and Prep’ is a clever little trio designed to extend the wear of your eyeshadow. Available in 3 shades, each trio contains two cream primers and a setting powder, giving you the ability to custom blend your own shade and smoothes eyelids ready for makeup application. The primer formula adheres onto the skin really nicely and eyeshadow grips onto the product without skipping.
I have the shade Dark (though for my skin tone you’d usually want Medium), I’ll be using it as my personal eye makeup and don’t tend to wear much on my eyes but this is perfect used alone for a quick polished eye with a little depth. I am so impressed by the texture, it’s a light cream with the grip of a richer cream (don’t worry it’s not thick or annoying to blend out!) Mario also has these helpful masterclasses for each product on his Instagram (linked below) so you can see the product in action.

For a tinted primer, it’s quite versatile and though I’ll use it as a matte cream eyeshadow it works brilliantly as intended. I can also see it being a beautiful blurring concealer. The accompanying setting powder is so finely milled yet locks in the cream perfectly. It’s the perfect brightening tone and I have taken to wearing it on my skin too! It provides a veil of insurance for your base and sits like a dream. My only complaint is that I wish it was available on it’s own- it would easily be one of my favourite powders!
I got this as a ‘nice to have’, but it has quickly become by favourite piece in the collection. I think it went under my radar because it’s not a loud as the rest of the range but I am so glad I picked it up. I’ve mentioned this before but I think the brand works for both pros and consumers (which isn’t easy!), using handy packaging and easy to use formulas with an eye to how pros work. In this case the Master Eye Set and Prep is reminiscent of any backstage fashion week kit where there will be multiple shades and powders used on each model- this takes that school of thought and makes it even easier housing it all in one compact. I LOVE!
I’d imagine this may be many peoples first foray into a cream primer instead of a liquid, but I love the grip that this provides to eyeshadow, it’s super smoothing and if you get the right tone could be worn alone. My shade, Dark is made to be a lighter base on deep tones so eye colours ‘pop’ and are at maximum vibrancy, but on me this on it’s way to becoming my favourite deep brown cream shadow and * maybe * even concealer in a pinch when I’m tanned- if I ever go on holiday again!

I’m surprised by how much I like this, I thought it would be a good formula – but I guess as Mario intended it ended up becoming quite the essential.
Makeup by Mario is available now at Sephora in the US (lucky you!) and worldwide from MakeupByMario.com. Master Eye Prep and Set is from the debut collection 01.
